  Runaways:

  Why do some children run away from home? Not because they are “bad”. Quite often they find what they need back at home after they have run away and a third party helps.

Minors Requiring Authoritative Intervention:

A law enforcement officer can take a youth who may be a Minor Requiring Authoritative Intervention  (MRAI) into limited custody if the youth is:

            a. absent from home without the consent of the parent or guardian or;

b. beyond the control of the parent or guardian and in circumstances which        constitute a substantial or immediate danger to the physical safety of the minor.

A MRAI petition can only be filed if the minor refuses to return home and no other alternative placement can be found.

Emergency shelters for runaways and youth having family problems are places where children can be safe, talk with counselors and decide what to do next.

Stress:

Stress is a normal part of life.  It can be positive or negative.  Many things cause stress: peer pressure; school; parents; children and families in general; pets; and many other things.  Stress is something that is felt inside of our bodies.  Stress happens when we react to the different events in our lives.  It is sometimes a feeling as simple as butterflies in the stomach, or stress can show up as a headache or other body pain.  Often people can tell they are feeling stress when they cannot sleep or sleep too much; they may eat more than they need to or not enough.  When people feel stressed, it is often difficult to cope with the different things going on in their lives. Some other signs of stress may include the following:

Signs of Stress

Ways to Reduce Stress

  Substance Abuse:

  Today there are many temptations to try alcohol or other drugs.  Different people give different reasons for trying alcohol or other drugs.  The most common reasons may be wanting to be sociable, wanting to be part of “the” group, to help express themselves or to reduce tension and anxiety.  Over a period of time, alcohol and other drugs can begin to control a person’s daily life.  Becoming a dependent or addicted both physically and mentally, can happen very quickly to anyone!  Drug problems can start small and get bigger.   Some people do not even notice.  Alcohol and other drugs can impair judgment, confuse thinking and limit one’s ability to communicate effectively.  Knowing the risks involved with using alcohol and other drugs is important.  When alcohol and other drugs are used in large amounts or together, the results can be deadly.
